How can we strengthen the emotional connections between children and learning?
Yoko is a learning tool designed primarily for mathematics and inspired by the popular self-teaching method of flashcards. Mathematics has been chosen due to the simplicity of the question and answer format that the subject lends itself to as well as its position as a core subject that teaches valuable life skills. However for the future, the product could be easily adapted to accommodate a wide range of different subjects.
The ergonomic, egg-shaped design is comfortable to hold in the hand and is reflective of the product’s purpose as a tool for learning and development. It has two rotating halves; the bottom being the “question” half and the top being the “answer and reaction” half. Users rotate the two halves relative to one another with the aim being to align the correct answer to the question. When answered correctly, the egg blooms into a flower, symbolic of success and the egg displays a new question.
Yoko focuses on positive reinforcement and building emotional connections to learning. It aims to make mathematics fun and encourages self-motivation, instilling independent learning skills from a young age. Using a range of physical, tactile and visual stimuli, children are taught to use more of their brain as they’re learning which has been proven to help hone deeper understanding of mathematics principles
